BRIEF HISTORY

An application for permission to set up a girls’ secondary school in Umudioka was officially filed on the 25th of February, 1966, the then sisters of the most pure heart of Mary. (Now Immaculate Heart Sisters of Mary), headed by mother Benedeth Anyiogu on behalf of Onitsha Archdiocese. This application for the proposed school was filed with the name, GIRLS’ SECONDARY GRAMMAR SCHOOL, UMUDIOKA.

The then Zonal Inspector of education, Rev, C. Woulfe, Visited the proposed school site on Saturday 12th April. 1966. The approval on the principal was given on the 16th of July, 1966. Before and after the approval, efforts and selfless contributions of the then Roman Catholic Mission of Umudioka, led by Mr. Mark Mbanefo (Chairman) and A. E. Metuh (Secretary) remains very encouraging and outstandingly patriotic. They unitedly supported the Rev. Sisters which glaringly reflected in one of their letters to the then Education Secretary of Onitsha archdiocese in which they resolved thus:

1. That we are prepared to do manual labour (clearing the site, leveling, and fetching water) as a

Substitute for money which we have not

1. That the preliminary teachers’ center (P. T. C.) Dining hall, kitchen and toilet should be renovated and used.
2. That the former P. T. C. Block should be renovated and modified to accommodated two classrooms, one reading room and science room.
3. That the dispensary block should be converted to a residential quarter and furnished as principal’s quarter.
4. That we will do the utmost in our power to raise five hundred pounds and give them to the rev. Sisters for the immediate commencement of work at the site.
5. We made plans and raised money after we had deposited a total sum of three hundred and Twenty pounds to the Rev. Sisters, it was almost the time for the ministry of education to come and inspect the building for approval. We did not want to miss the golden opportunity.
6. We made quick contacts and had no alternative but to borrow four hundred pounds from a very good friend who gave us the loan without any interest but on the condition that we repay him by June 1967.
7. We handed over the sum of four hundred pounds to the Rev. Sisters and this brought our total sum raised to seven hundred and Twenty pounds.
8. In spite of this large sum deposited, there was yet much to be done. We had to beg for loans from our local traders and borrowed another lump sum of Two Hundred and Fifty pounds with this sum, we bought and donated building materials, forced everyone to direct labour to see that the school dormitory is completed before the inspection day.
9. We later introduced forced labour without pay: All our members, men, women, youth, student, carpenters and masons had no choice but to work three days each for full six weeks.(Quotes)

Worthy of note is the fact that the above selfless contributions were joyfully made by the members of the Roman Catholic mission, Umudioka to make sure that a Girls’ secondary school was established in Umudioka. Happily, these outstanding efforts and those of the then sister of the most pure Heart of Mary were not in vain, hence the final official approval for the school was given on the 19th of January, 1967 with the approval number: V INC SD 18920/SEDSPEC. Much thanks to God for a dream realized.

However, in the last sixties, the school experienced major challenges but true to types, reflecting the resilient character, robust culture and solid rock foundation and tradition of St. Kizito to overcome challenges no matter how difficult, the school reinvented herself stronger to the glory of God and credit to the then management of the school

In 1973, our school was merged with Ogidi Girls’ Secondary school as campus II. But by relentless effort of the then Umudioka improvement union and some philanthropist sons of Umudioka, our school was demerged from Ogidi Girls’ with the name- Girls Secondary school, Umudioka.

In the year 2000, a new trend in secondary Education was introduced in the state which necessitated the emergence of junior and senior secondary schools in all the state. Thus of our school then had two schools each headed by different principals. Shortly, the two schools became one again in 2004, headed by Rev. Sr. Dr. Mary Cecile Umenwune.

Our school however survived the turmoil, decadence and happenstance of the past years we all prefer to rather forget in the history of education in Eastern Nigeria. How happy we are when the dawn of the glorious days of the returns of schools to their original owners by the public Education Law of 14th September, 2009 was passed. Consequently, the proprietorship, management and control of our school were gladly returned to the catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha.

In 2012, our school applied and got approval for a change of name from the state ministry of education. The school’s name was ten changed from Girls’ Secondary School, Umudioka to ST. KIZITO GIRLS’ SECONDARY SCHOOL, UMUDIOKA. The first manager of our school was Rev, Fr, Chrysantus Igwe. He managed our school from 2010-2013 and handed over to Rev, Fr, Nonso okoye, the incumbent manager in 2013.

We are about 1030 students, 18 hostels, 90 members of the staff, solar powered electricity, and clinic with resident medical personnel. Three boreholes, sound proof generators, school chapel for prayer.

Sales of admission /entrance forms start from February till the day for the exams. Entrance examination comes up on every first Saturday of May and first Saturday of August. Attached to the form is one passport photo. The results are accessed online. Forms are only obtainable from the school
